Policjanci Peel poparli Alvina Tedjo

Kandydat na burmistrza Mississaugi, Alvin Tedjo (środek) podczas konferencji prasowej ściska dłoń Adriana Wooleya, prezesa Peel Regional Police Association.

Związek zawodowy reprezentujący blisko 4 tys. funkcjonariuszy i pracowników cywilnych Peel Regional Police poparł Alvina Tedjo w wyborach na burmistrza Mississaugi. To pierwszy przypadek, gdy Peel Regional Police Association oficjalnie opowiedziało się za kandydatem na burmistrza miasta.

Tedjo, obecnie radny okręgu 2 obejmującego m.in. Clarkson i Lorne Park, rywalizuje m.in. z urzędującą burmistrz Carolyn Parrish, byłą burmistrz Bonnie Crombie oraz radną Dipiką Damerlą.

Związek uzasadnił swoją decyzję przede wszystkim programem Tedjo dotyczącym przestępczości i bezpieczeństwa. Kandydat zapowiada zatrudnienie dodatkowych policjantów, walkę z kradzieżami samochodów i przestępczością z użyciem przemocy oraz unowocześnienie metod pracy policji.

Prezes PRPA Adrian Wooley stwierdził, że związek współpracował wcześniej zarówno z Parrish, jak i Crombie, ale nie zawsze miał poczucie, że problemy zgłaszane przez funkcjonariuszy oraz kwestie bezpieczeństwa otrzymywały wystarczającą uwagę.

Tedjo chce również zabiegać o zmianę sposobu finansowania Peel Regional Police, tak aby – jak przekonuje – zmniejszyć obciążenie podatników w Mississaudze i Brampton. Zapowiada ponadto utworzenie specjalnego wydziału bezpieczeństwa Mississaugi i organizowanie corocznych spotkań poświęconych bezpieczeństwu mieszkańców.

Na poparcie policyjnego związku zareagowała Bonnie Crombie. Przypomniała, że sama uzyskała poparcie byłego przewodniczącego Peel Police Services Board Rona Chathy. Podkreśliła również, że w czasie jej pracy w policyjnej radzie zatwierdzono budżet przewidujący zatrudnienie dodatkowych 135 funkcjonariuszy.

Wybory samorządowe w Mississaudze odbędą się 26 października. Mieszkańcy wybiorą burmistrza, radnych oraz członków rad szkolnych.
